Fair-Trade Policy

Our team at Folk Fabrics Co is like a close-knit family; we share a good bond among ourselves, and over the years we have established a loyal community for us to thrive in. We consistently collaborate with the same set of dedicated artisans and skilled crafts-persons from various parts of India.

We intend to continue working with them for the foreseeable future.

Folk Fabrics Co largely works with fair trade cooperatives and small workshops to create artisanal masterpieces using traditional techniques such as block printing, hand embroidery, and hand weaving.

We wish to acknowledge and bring to the limelight, the skills and talents of these traditional artisans, while also preserving their arts and crafts sustainably.

It is unfortunate that most of the highly skilled artisans come from humble backgrounds and remote rural regions; they grow up without access to quality education, and are often forced to give up their crafts to earn meagre sums of money for their livelihood.

By giving wings to their craft, we wish to make it possible for them to not just perverse it, but to also pass it down to the next generation, ensuring that these cherished artforms continue to survive in their original form.

At Folk Fabrics Co we take every possible measure to ensure that our suppliers are transparent about the working hours, working conditions, and costing time frames of the artisans. We have a stringent social code to regulate the terms and conditions that must be met to ensure the artisans’ wellbeing; we make sure our suppliers remain compliant and updated with regards to this social code for artisans’ welfare.

We also seek to keep the artisans and craftsmen explicitly informed about the terms and conditions put in place to ensure their wellbeing.

Zero Tolerance for Unfair Trade Practices

Several important steps are involved in creating beautiful, earthy fabrics using organic colours and hand-weaving techniques. At Folk Fabrics Co, we have a deliberate reverence for our artisans and their art.

We make routine visits to various parts of India where our suppliers are located, to ensure that the artisans and craftsmen have a healthy work-life balance, a harmonious, clean work environment, and dignity of labour.

We are dedicated to eradicating serious problems that come up within our community of craftsmen owing to a lack of resources and funding, by concertedly raising awareness about these issues among the general public and our customer base.

When procedural glitches come up in our dealings with our suppliers, we collaboratively brainstorm, strategize, and come up with mutually beneficial action plans. Folk Fabrics Co provides dedicated support to the artisans and suppliers at every stage of the production process.

We expect complete compliance from our suppliers regarding the wellbeing of the craftsmen and artisans that make our organic fabrics, and our deliberately stubborn that our fair-trade guidelines be adhered to. In the event that a certain supplier is unwilling or unable to adapt to our fair-trade guidelines, we deem it best to bring our professional relationship with the said supplier to a close, for the wellbeing of our artisans and customers.

Low Waste Sustainable Production Practices

We follow time-tested demand prediction techniques to avoid over-production and inventory clutter, season after season. This means, we are rarely stuck with leftover organic fabrics and textiles. Such practices also ensure that every season, we’re able to offer fresh designs, patterns, and themes to organic textile and slow fashion connoisseurs.

Occasionally, we do end up with small amounts of leftover organic fabric from previous seasons. In such cases, we make it a point to either use the fabric smartly in our daily operations, or donate it to charities for children and the less fortunate.

Keeping Our Carbon Footprint in Check

When producing organic fabrics, we make sure that raw materials are not only processed organically, but also grown organically to ensure sustainability, and soil and water preservation. The organic cotton we use is grown without toxins, using non-GMO seeds and natural fertilizers to ensure that the soil and air remain clean.

Organic cotton farming takes up less than half the water and energy that conventional cotton farming takes up. In the long run, conventional cotton farming damages the soil quality and leaves large pieces of land unyielding in nature.

When organic cotton farming is practiced on a piece of land, the cotton farmer is able to use the land for growing other crops as well, once the cotton season is over. Such farmers are able to live quality lives, educate their children, and ensure the welfare of their families.

Organic Reusable Packaging

All our online orders are packaged in 100% organic cotton that is biodegradable in its entirety. Our packaging can be used to store foods with long shelf-lives, other delicate clothes, accessories, and even shoes.

Folk Fabrics Co & Animal Welfare

We are animal lovers and tree-huggers at heart. Environmentalists at the core, all of us at Folk Fabrics Co are individually and collectively concerned about the welfare and safety of animals and birds.

Because we use natural textiles such as organic cotton, organic wool, and natural linen, animals and insects are our partners in the process of fabric production.

We only source our fabrics and fibres from eco-sensitive wool producers who support the highest standards of animal husbandry and sustainability.

It is of utmost importance to us that the animals who provide us with raw material for our organic fabrics are treated with unconditional love, reverence, and care at all times.

At Folk Fabrics Co, we vehemently refuse to be involved in any kind of animal cruelty, or animal mistreatment for our benefit.

From time to time, shocking incidents pertaining to mistreatment of animals are reported in the press; we find such incidents heart wrenching and unacceptable. We wish to assure our customers and stakeholders that Folk Fabrics Co never has supported and never will support associations, groups, or individuals who directly or indirectly become party to the abuse of animals.

Our Makers

At Folk Fabrics Co, we embark on creative explorations from time to time, travelling the length and breadth of the country to seek traditional artistes from the remotest corners of India. We are perpetually on a mission to bring the expertise and talent of such traditional crafts-persons to the forefront, and to ensure that traditional crafts do not become extinct with the passage of time.

To this end, we offer dignified job-work and fair wages to these artisans, in exchange for creative, expert craftsmanship. We lay immense emphasis on maintaining fair and ethical standards with respect to working hours, working environments, and wages. Because of our emphasis on upholding ethical standards for seeking work from artisans and craftsmen over the years, we have now managed to build mutual trust and cooperation. We consider ourselves fortunate for being able to offer our clients clean fabrics, crafted with love, dignity, and reverence for the weave.
